GYC Activity Update

Thanks to all of the schools who have submitted steps #1-3! We appreciate you getting the paperwork to us and you should be receiving your first check shortly. If your school hasn't had a chance to turn your materials in yet, it's not too late! Get those to us as soon as possible so that we can move on to our next step and get you your funding as well!

Since we don't have all of the surveys from step #2, 3 back yet, we've postponed step #4, our presentation to the school boards, till February. As such, we will be preparing for Step #5, our Policy Maker's Breakfast at our meeting in December. The breakfast is scheduled for January 9, 2010 from 8:00-9:00 AM here at the health department. Advisors are all welcome to attend but are not required. Please just help your student reps practice their part of the presentation.

We hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving and that you are looking forward to the holiday season approaching us! Thanks again for your leadership with these students! We truly enjoy working with all of you!

GYC Activities to be posted to brhd.org

For the "techy teens" out there, GYC has finally joined the 21st century. We will now have all of our step outlines posted on the Bear River Health Department website, brhd.org. There will be a hyperlink from this blog to that site! So if you have questions or comments on the steps, we can post them here and everyone gets the answer! Happy blogging!

Policy Maker's Breakfast

Our GYC members don't sleep in on Saturday...instead they like to host a breakfast for the policy maker's in our community. On January 10, the GYC was pleased to present to 1 senator, 3 representatives, and 1 mayor regarding their mission and activities for this year. They discussed their interest in smoke free beach and park policies. They expressed the need for recreational areas to be a place where people can spend leisure time and not have to be exposed to harmful carcinogens, such as secondhand smoke. Overall, it was a great success and everyone learned a lot!

GYC heads to the capitol

On February 23, 2009, the GYC visited the state capitol. There they met with Rep Fred Hunsaker, Rep Ronda Menlove, Rep Curt Webb, and Rep Jack Draxler. They toured the capitol and learned more about the legislative process.
